While Lichty Guitars and Ukuleles come in a variety of shapes and sizes they all have a sound, feel, look and vibe that can be described as distinctly Lichty. Each is an heirloom quality one-of-a-kind instrument built from the highest quality materials, each has been handcrafted by Jay and each has been played by Jay to ensure the tone, fit and feel are the best.
Sometimes deciding which style instrument you’d like to be playing can be a challenge. We’ve provided the following information to help you explore the options:
Guitars are currently offered in following designs: Dreadnought, OM Alchemist, Crossover and Parlor. Each can come as a cutaway, as a left-handed model and with design features like a wedge-shaped body and a side soundhole.
Square-shouldered, deep-bodied, familiar and comfortable. The Lichty dreadnought-style guitar is a contemporary interpretation of the most popular steel string guitar design in the world. Jay blends the best of the old with the new by honoring the classic guitar-building traditions while infusing his intuitive luthier style into the build process.
While a classic rosewood or mahogany D-series type model is an option, our extensive selection of premium domestic and exotic woods makes the variety of custom designs and options almost endless. The quality of the dreadnought sound is full, balanced and powerful with deep bass registers.

Since its introduction nearly sixty years ago by CF Martin & Co., the OM (Orchestra Model) has become a favorite with fingerstyle soloists and yet it’s the perfect fit for a wide range of playing styles. The Lichty OM has a 14 fret neck, a smaller body than the dreadnought and sloping shoulders. This Lichty design is recognized for its responsive playability and for producing balanced crystal clear notes from one end of the scale to other. Unlike the dreadnought, the bass register does not dominate.

If there was ever a guitar that could weave your notes, chords and intonations into pure gold the Alchemist just might be it. Jay headed out to the shop with the thread of a new guitar design in mind. Days later he emerged from clouds of sawdust with the first Alchemist in hand.
Features: Distinctive body lines with a OM style size, a wedge-shaped body (inspired by the innovations of Linda Manzer) a side sound port, extended fretboard, bound fretboard and headstock and Gotoh 510 tuners all distinguish the Alchemist.

The term “parlor guitar” dates back to the days before recorded music when entertainment was live and it occurred in the “parlors” (though we’d like to point out the hottest music on these small-bodied guitars was most likely cooking on the front porches and in the back streets). Back in the day the parlor was actually the more common guitar size. Today, the term has become a catch-all to describe small bodies guitars. Contrary to popular myth, their compact size isn’t designed for women or for smaller players. Their size and design allows for a perfect balance of frequencies. One of the most common things we hear when folks pick up a Lichty Parlor to play is, “Wow, such a big full sound from such a small guitar.” It’s small size makes it the ideal travel partner, as it can fit in the overhead compartment on most airplanes. Its full spectrum tone makes it a powerful tool for the singer/songwriter.
While they were most popular around the turn of the 20th Century, in the 21st Century parlor guitars are experiencing a renaissance amongst guitar players both in USA and internationally. We are excited to be a part of that revival!

This crossover guitar is my attempt at bridging the gap between a classical and a steel string guitar. It has the body and bracing of a Ramirez classical coupled with a radius fret board and a 1-7/8″ nut width. Classical guitars typically have a 2″ to 2-1/4″ nut width and steel string guitars are 1-11/16″ to 1-13/16″ so we have split the difference. We added a truss rod, a body cutaway and a side sound port (both optional), as well as a K&K Classic pickup and strung her up with nylon strings. Being a steel string player it took me a just a short while and I was hooked… once I got used to the technical differences (lighter tension on the strings) I was hooked big time. From the really defined and powerful bass through the mids into the nice clear trebles one note with this guitar’s amazing sustain brings a smile … a string of notes brings a thrill. This latest guitar is a keeper in our line.

We currently offer tenor and baritone size ukuleles, though other sizes are available upon request. All ukuleles may be built with a side sound port. Our ukulele customers are a diverse mix. Some exclusively play ukuleles and others are guitar players who are intrigued with the rich tone and full sound of Lichty Ukes. What we’ve come to love about ukuleles, in part thanks to the greats like Jake Shimabukuro, is how well they adapt to all genres of music and all playing styles. While Jay has been a guitar player most of his life, his ukulele rarely leaves his side these days. One more point we’d like to add – you’d be hard pressed to find a better travel instrument.
A top choice for performing soloists, the tenor is larger than the concert and soprano size, and therefore produces greater volume and a more complex tone than smaller ukuleles. Its larger size also makes it an easier adaption for guitar players. (Available in High G or Low G)

The baritone is the largest of the ukulele sizes and produces the deepest sound. Given its size and its tuning (often the same as the bottom four strings of the guitar – DGBE), many guitar players find it the perfect cross-over instrument to expand their playing experience.
