On the night of January 25th the fog rolled in and the rains pounded … not fit for man nor beast to go out in. I have to say, you couldn’t tell that by the 40 or so folks who joined us at Isothermal Community College that evening for our Meet the Luthier event. We had a great turn out and had serious fun. Old friends and new attended and many played just about every instrument we had on hand. That’s what makes the format of these events so cool. The first part is basically an open invitation for people to pick up and play any instrument and to talk one-on-one with Jay. How many times does a musician have an opportunity to play so many handcrafted instruments in one sitting? Some folks have never played anything other than factory-built models. The talent in the room was humbling to say the least and every instrument was well-loved.
We decided to try something new this time. Jay opened up his concert for the second half of the evening with an instrumental piece played to a slide show featuring step by step images of the building of a guitar. The audience seemed to love that and the interactive nature of the show. Jay fielded questions throughout, shared a few stories and played a mix of ukuleles and guitars.
It was a wonderful evening and we are so grateful to Katie Barkschat, Director of the ICC Polk Count Campus, and to all the staff at the college for their assistance. Too, a big thank you goes to each and every person who attended and contributed to a great time.
