Here is more of the story …
As more people seek learning vacations, immersing themselves in learning something new, a small number of luthiers are offering workshops to learn the art of guitar and ukulele building. Jay Lichty of Lichty Guitars in Tryon, NC is one such luthier offering participants the opportunity to craft the musical instrument of their dreams.
Most folks in the small town of Tryon, NC know Jay Lichty as the local guitar builder, working sun up to sun down in his shop crafting handmade acoustic guitars and ukuleles. To date, he has put strings on over 160 instruments shipping around the world.
But not as many folks know about the extra dust that is getting kicked up in his shop by his many enthusiastic guitar building and ukulele building students. Throughout the year Jay mentors participants through individual and small group guitar building workshops that begin with raw wood and end with strings going on beautiful one-of-a-kind guitars and ukuleles. “It just seemed like a natural progression of the business to go from building guitars to teaching others how to build them. It’s like camp for grown-ups in a beautiful place. Folks have a great time and the reward is so huge, taking home a guitar you built with your own hands,” reflects Jay.
Students come from as far away as British Columbia and California and from just down the road. “Building a guitar with Jay Lichty is one of the best gifts I’ve ever given myself, an experience I’ll cherish for life,” says Karina. “I truly loved it more than my visits to Venice, Paris or Rome.”
A typical workshop runs 12 consecutive days with prices running from $2,500 to $4,200 and up depending on the custom options chosen by the student and the size of the group (1 to 4). Learn more at Acoustic Guitar Building Workshops and Ukulele Building Workshops.
