When we come across an organization or an event that consistently delivers value we like to spread the word. Case in point: The Swannanoa Gathering.
For over twenty years musicians (amateur and pro alike) have gathered on the magical campus of Warren Wilson College in western NC for what is typically a week-long emersion in their favorite music. It is basically the ultimate summer camp for grown-ups. If you love guitar, you sign up for Guitar Week. Is banjo your thing? Then, you guessed it, you can sign up for Banjo Week. About ten years or so ago Jay dove into Guitar Week and loved it.
If you have been following our blog as of late you will know that Jay’s latest obsession is fiddle (both playing and building). Where does someone whose every waking thought is fiddles go? Fiddle Week at The Swannanao Gathering! For 6 glorious (and yes, overwhelming) days and nights in July Jay attended classes, concerts and jam-sessions. His class-mates were from all over the world and spanned the ages of 15-85. Some were very new to fiddle while others were vastly talented. His instructors were hands-down some of the finest fiddle players around (and many are players whose tunes Jay has followed and loved for years). Just a few of the fine instructors include: Byron Berline, Darol Anger, Evan Price and Jeremy Kittel. A highlight for Jay was the concert line-up each night!
The timing was perfect because Jay was ripe to learn new things in terms of playing skills and he was able to take with him his first fiddle, a walnut five string fiddle. It is so unique that it caught lots of attention and many folks asked to play it. The resounding feedback from both the players and teachers – it is an amazing instrument! What a great way to kick-off the Lichty Fiddle adventure!
So, if the idea of coming to the NC mountains next summer to play music for a week strikes your fancy, we encourage you to check out The Swannanoa Gathering. And hey, while you are in our neck of the woods contact us to come by our luthier shop for a visit!
