____________
What is New Harmonies?
Come and experience the rich sounds of American music through an interactive traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibit hosted at the Landrum Library August 4 – September 16.
Known as New Harmonies: Celebrating American American Roots Music, the Landrum showing takes place during library hours and is open to the public without charge. The library can also schedule group tours which take about 45 minutes.
Through a selection of photographs, recordings, instruments, lyrics and artist profiles, the exhibit explores the distinct cultural identities of American roots music forms. Blues, country Western, folk, gospel, zydeco, tejano, bluegrass and klezmer are featured.
The term “roots music” refers to all music that has grown out of older folk traditions, evolving over time from Anglo-European, Native American and West African cultures to include diverse immigrant groups, telling a distinctive American story.
This exhibit will reach 12 rural communities in the state when the tour concludes in January 2013.
The Landrum Library was chosen as a host by the Humanities Council SC as part of the Museum on Main Street (MOMS) project, a national/state/local partnership to bring exhibitions and programs to rural cultural organizations in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The U. S. Congress provides support for MOMS.
Throughout the six weeks of the exhibit, free concerts and lectures on all aspects of American roots music will take place in Landrum.
The complete schedule is posted at infodeport.org and includes a printable schedule. Printed information will be available after July 1 at the Landrum Library.
