Wayne Henderson Test-drives a Lichty Guitar
Jay just can’t let too much time pass without a road trip north to Rugby, Virginia to visit friend and mentor, Wayne Henderson. It’s an added bonus when Don Wilson is on hand. These two gentleman helped to set the blocking and bracing of Lichty Guitars in those first days, with their guidance and shared skills. Their mentorship continues each time Jay pays them a visit. Anyone who has had the pleasure of visiting or working with Wayne in his shop knows that at every turn there is something new to learn. Granted, Wayne makes everything appear effortless when it comes to guitar playing and guitar making, but that skill comes from having rounded the bend on building guitar number 500 and setting off toward number 600! It is an honor to compare guitar building notes with such a master.
When Jay heads north to see Wayne he carries along a few of his latest guitars. Despite the multiple projects underway at any given time, Wayne sets down his pocket knife, turns off the sander and pulls up a chair to play each new Lichty. What a thrill and what a kindness. Wayne seemed truly pleased with all three guitars, the latest Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnought, an Indian Rosewood OM Guitar with a Curly Redwood top, and a Brazilian Rosewood Parlor .
It is a humbling experience to feel such encouragement and support from Wayne. As Jay works on guitar #45, you better believe, making Wayne Henderson proud is a beautiful thing!
